benefits of chewingIf you would like to improve your health and energy levels, a good place to start is by doing one simple thing – Chew. Your. Food. In our fast paced lifestyles or simply by habit, many people eat their food mindlessly without giving much attention to chewing. Most people chew enough so that they won’t choke on their food and down it goes.

Whether you want to lose those last 5 stubborn pounds, satisfy your cravings or rev up your energy, Chewing is for you.

Here are 5 Great Reasons Why Chewing Will Help Improve Your Health

1. Gain More Nutrients From The Food You Are Eating

You may be eating the healthiest diet, but if you are not fully chewing your food you may not be getting the full nutrient value of what you are eating. The more that food is broken down, the more nutrients that will come out of it.

In Macrobiotics they suggest chewing food 100 times to allow the saliva to break down the food enough to be easily digested in the stomach. I tried this but it felt like forever.. What worked for me better was to chew the food until it almost completely dissolved. This morning I practiced mindful chewing while eating my oatmeal at breakfast and salad at lunch. These are two things that I eat often and I experienced a whole new abundance of flavours that I had never noticed before. I could actually taste the water coming out of the salad leaves.

So chew to get the most “juice” possible from those great foods your eating.

2. Promote Good Dental Health

“The enzymes found in saliva are essential in beginning the process of digestion of dietary starches and fats. These enzymes also play a role in breaking down food particles entrapped within dental crevices, protecting teeth from bacterial decay.” – Wikipedia

3. Increase Your Energy

When you eat something, big or small, your body uses energy to digest it. When you chew your food more, the food is broken down into a smaller and much more manageable form which can travel through the digestive system faster. The less energy that is being used by your body to turn and churn the food, the lighter and more energized you will feel.

4. Enjoy Your Food

By mindfully chewing your food, you actually get to taste and enjoy your food. How does it get any better than that.

5. Eat Less and Lose Weight

By eating slower, the brain has time to register that food is entering the system. The sooner the brain gets the signal, the sooner it can give you the body the signal when it has had enough. Commonly what happens when we eat too fast is the food is dropping into the stomach at record speed and the brain is off to a false start to signal the digestive system to activate. This can result in overeating, gas/bloating and slower digestion of your food.

So if you want to eat less without starving yourself, chew your food and help kickstart the digestive process. The more work you can do to break down the food in your mouth = less work for the digestive system to break down the food = better and faster absorption and distribution of the nutrients to nourish your vital body organs.
