In all my studies to become a health coach, I have learned the power of questions to make a real transformation. We all search for the magic path to our destination externally – by asking our friends/family/mentors, looking for resources online etc. – but the best answers of how to get to point A an B are on the inside.

Has someone ever told you what you think you should do and your are not quite satisfied with the result? You intellectually understand that it is a smart decision but part of you questions if that is really the right direction to go. However, if you came to the same conclusion on your own, you would feel much more confident moving forward in making a change.

So each new year we set these wonderful goals to “lose weight” or “be more positive” or “get a new job”. With a new year, we love the idea of a fresh start. Unfortunately these goals will not manifest themselves anymore than they did on December 31th. Darn!

So what can you do to actually makes this a year of change?

The #1 reason new years resolutions fail is because we have no tools in our tool kit. We fail to plan for the job ahead.

As you may have noticed in past years/months when you set a new years resolution, you will be motivated the first couple weeks of January and then die down. Or maybe January will come and you say, oh I will wait til holidays are over and then I will make a change, only to find months and another year go by with no action.

So what can you do differently this year to set yourself up for success?

The first two tools you should put in your toolkit are SMART goals and deadlines.

Saying “I want to lose weight” does not cut it here. Saying “I want to fit back into my pre-pregnancy jeans” is much more measurable. Instead of “I want to save more money” use “I want to save $10,000 this year so I can buy a new car”.

Setting a deadline to accomplish your goals will help make it a priority. Let’s say I want to be in my skinny jeans by June. And if you don’t make it there by June, please don’t abort mission. Reassess and see what else needs to be done to make this possible.

The next three tools will be your big hitters to take you from an idea to a solid plan of action.

So January comes, we have our goals in hand and then we can sometime be in scramble mode thinking what do I do now to make this happen? We go by the seat of pants hoping things will be different this time.

I am going to share 3 powerful questions with you that will help keep the fire under your butt so things WILL BE different this time!

Goal by goal, I want to you answer each of these questions:

  1. Why is this goal important to me?
  2. What needs to happen to make this goal happen?
  3. What obstacles may get in the way of implementing the actions needed to reach this goal and how may I get around them?

When I first started doing goal setting, it was surprising how many times I got stumped on the first question “why is this goal important to me?”. You then wonder, where did this goal come from if I don’t know even know why I want it? Knowing why it is important, will help you make this goal a priority. It is no longer a superficial goal of “lose weight” but has now become “I want to lose weight so I can participate in more activities with my kids etc..”.

We can sometimes be naive to the obstacles that can get in the way of achieving our goals. By writing down a contingency plan, it is setting you up to keep plowing forward.
